Behind the Screen: What amuses you?

Posted by Dante at 12:46 AM
After Friday's post, it has become increasingly clear (thank you, commenters) that I am easily amused. It appears that I tend to fall for most old jokes at least once, and that must be why I currently love our D&D group.

You see, in addition to featuring everyone's favorite non-sequitor generator Vanir we also feature a few members of our group that delight in horrifyingly severe puns. And they're almost always funny once.

So rampant and severe the rate of punning, we had to institute an "out of character" demarcation to determine when a joke was being cracked and when the player was acting in character. (This should clue you in as to the level of seriousness that most of our campaigns attain.) In our group, holding up a piece of paper is the way to tell the GM that whatever it is to come spewing out of your word-hole next is not to be considered in-character. It is usually quite effective, until someone in your group realizes that by holding up a piece of paper they can speak freely and frequently for the whole session We all have our crosses to bear!

So that leads me to the question of the day: Does your group fall back on any humor/movie quote/funny stuff when nothing else presents itself? How do you manage things when the line blurs between character acting and player venting?

I know some groups continually fall back on Princess Bride quotes, Monty Python sketches, or Slayer lyrics. So what does it for your group? Whatever it is, I guarantee you I will fall for it at least once!

Pretty much "that's what she said!" jokes. We also reference Star Wars (especially Admiral Ackbar's "it's a trap!") and Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged a lot.

And Charlie the Unicorn if we can get away with it.

Oh my Lord, I can't stand Charlie the Unicorn any more. We have one Charlie advocate in our group and I cringe every time I hear it. :)

For my group, it's dirty jokes and innuendo. Last Saturday, we decided that in Dave's handwriting, the 'warlock' character sheet actually said 'warcock'. It didn't take long for us to decide our adventuring group would henceforth be known as the Warcocks. This kept us going the rest of the session. We went through a town with a chicken farm, so of course we had to look for the town's warcocks. We discussed the assault on a castle... "She's closed up tight, lads--bring out the Warcock!" I was playing a male character with an unrequited passion for a female party member, so I had to keep making references to my warcock being at her service. And so on. I think we get just as much enjoyment out of the dirty banter as we do out of slaying orcs.

@happyturtle: LOL. Yeah, stuff like that's always totally there. For my group I'd say we enjoy the banter more. Except for the time we met a magic-resistant golem (finally something the wizard couldn't nuke in one hit).

All the time. Constantly. From "Wait...can you make a Magebred Battle Cow" to movies to the inuendos. I normally let it slide or add on to it. On occasion, I've been known to force the quote into the game (and letting the party deal with the consequences). Overall, if I threaten the quote, it normally gets the group back into play.

I'm actually the most likely person at the table to make a joke about something in-game, even when I'm DMing. I hope my players find "all the zombies want to do is eat your brains!" nearly as funny as I do :-P
